When God Feels Distant: What a Crisis of Faith Really Means (and How to Find Your Way Back)

There’s a kind of struggle that many women don’t talk about out loud.
You still believe in God. You still consider yourself a Christian..
But if you’re honest… something feels off.
Your prayers feel empty. Worship and your personal time with God doesn’t move you like it used to.. And deep down, there’s this quiet question you’re almost afraid to admit:
“Where is God… and why do I feel so far from Him?”
If that’s you, I want you to know something first:
You’re not losing your faith but you are in a moment that needs your attention, not your shame.
What a Crisis of Faith Actually Is
A crisis of faith isn’t always a dramatic moment where someone walks away from God.
Most of the time, it’s much quieter than that.
It looks like:
Going through the motions spiritually but feeling disconnected
Questioning things you used to feel sure about
Feeling disappointed, confused, or even hurt by God
Wondering why your faith doesn’t feel “strong” anymore
And here’s the truth most people don’t say:
A crisis of faith doesn’t mean your faith is gone. It usually means something deeper in your heart is unresolved and there's a change of direction needed.
You Didn’t Lose Your Faith… You Might Be Tired
Sometimes what feels like a spiritual issue is actually emotional exhaustion.
If you’ve been:
Carrying anxiety for a long time
Walking through a painful life transition
Feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, or mentally drained
…it can affect how connected you feel to God.
Even in Scripture, we see this.
Think about Elijah.
After experiencing something incredibly powerful with God, he didn’t suddenly become faithless but became exhausted, overwhelmed, and afraid.
He ran, he hid, and he questioned everything.
And what did God do?
He didn’t correct him first. He didn’t shame him.
He let him rest. He fed him. He cared for him.
Sometimes, what you need isn’t more pressure to “fix your faith.” Sometimes, you need restoration.
When God Feels Silent
One of the hardest parts of a crisis of faith is feeling like God is distant.
But feelings can be misleading.
The Bible reminds us in Hebrews 13:5 that God says:
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
That means even when you don’t feel Him…even when your emotions say otherwise…
His presence hasn’t changed.
Your awareness of Him might feel different, but His closeness to you has not moved.
The Truth About Doubt
A lot of women feel ashamed when they start questioning things.
But doubt doesn’t disqualify you from God.
Look at Thomas.
He literally doubted Jesus after the resurrection.
And Jesus didn’t reject him. He met him right in his doubt.
God is not intimidated by your questions. He invites you to bring them to Him.
What Might Be Beneath Your Crisis of Faith
In my work with women, a crisis of faith is rarely just about God.
It’s often connected to things like:
Disappointment (“I thought God would come through differently…”)
Unprocessed grief
Anxiety that’s gone unaddressed
Identity struggles
Trying to “perform” spiritually instead of being honest
So instead of asking, “What’s wrong with my faith?”
A better question might be:
“What’s going on in my heart that I haven’t fully brought to God yet?”
How to Reconnect with God (Gently, Not Forcefully)

If you’re in this place right now, you don’t need to force yourself into spiritual routines that feel heavy.
Start here instead:
1. Be honest with God
Not polished. Not perfect. Just real.
“God, I feel distant from You.” “I don’t understand what You’re doing.” “I miss feeling close to You.”
That honesty is a doorway, that will definitely get a response from God.
This humility moves His heart.
2. Remove the pressure to “feel something”
Connection with God isn’t proven by emotion.
Sometimes the deepest faith looks like showing up… even when you feel nothing.
3. Tend to your emotional health
Your mental and emotional state matters.
God created you as a whole person: mind, body, and spirit.
Ignoring your anxiety, burnout, or pain can make spiritual connection feel harder than it needs to be.
4. Let this season refine you, not define you
This isn’t the end of your faith.
It’s a moment within your story.
And God is still writing it.
You’re Not a Bad Christian, but are in a Real Season
If no one has told you this:
You are not failing God.
You are a human being navigating life, emotions, and faith all at the same time.
And God is not standing at a distance waiting for you to “get it together.”
He’s right there… even in this version of you.
If You’re Ready for Support

Sometimes, walking through a crisis of faith isn’t something you need to do alone.
If you’re feeling:
Disconnected from God
Overwhelmed with anxiety or emotional heaviness
Confused about where you are spiritually
…this is exactly the kind of space where healing can begin with the right support.
In my work, I help women:
Process what they’re really feeling beneath the surface
Reconnect with God in a way that feels authentic, not forced
Develop a Christ-centered mindset that brings clarity and peace
You don’t have to figure this out by yourself.

Or start by simply sitting with this question:
“God, what are You trying to show me in this season?”
He’s not absent.
And you’re not as far from Him as you feel.
Praying for you to embark on the most beautiful and fruitful journey!
